Four days until OctPoWriMo begins!

As I said in the first post this month, we are doing things differently this year for OctPoWriMo. We will still be posting daily, talking about the prompts, giving our own interpretations of them, and more.

Remember, our prompts are only a suggestions, where you find inspiration for your poetry is up to you. During OctPoWriMo, if you want to make sure that we know you have written something new, comment in that day's post and share your link on social media with the hashtag, #OctPoWriMo.

I will also be posting this on Instagram for those that wish to participate there instead of on a blog.

Outside In - OctPoWriMo 2016 Countdown

I have a thing for photos of windows and doors, especially if they are colorful or there is something interesting about them. I can usually see a story/poem when I see a photo such as the one below. Some of the words that come to mind: open, closed, in, out, outside in, either side, on the threshold, in-between, locked inside. So many possibilities.

Is there any specific thing that when you look at it you feel inspired to write something about it?

Fantasy - OctPoWriMo 2016 Countdown

Sometimes I like to escape into the world of Sci-fi/fantasy, both in reading fiction and in writing poetry. In writing fantasy poetry, the only limit is the imagination. One of my all time favorite poems is, Phantasmagoria by Lewis Carroll. If you haven't read it, I highly recommend you do.

Do you write ever write Sci-fi/fantasy poetry? If you did, what inspired you to do so?

Grass is Always Greener - OctPoWriMo 2016 Countdown

That saying, "The grass is always greener." feels so true and also feels like it is in opposition with being able to live in the moment, as living in the moment you wouldn't be thinking of what you don't have but enjoying what you do.

So much is going on in my life right now, I'm hoping that things will turn a corner for the better soon. Maybe it's just Mercury Retrograde messing with me, though as I've always said, it is a perfect time to dive into what needs to be cleared on all levels. I guess I need to get clearing, darn it.

Lots of fodder for poetry, I wonder what music I should play to stir things up to have the words dancing onto the page.

Photo by Morgan Dragonwillow - Thinking serene thoughts.

What fodder is stirring in your life?

OctPoWriMo 2016 Countdown - Writing Dangerously

Today in my jewelry making class, my professor made a profound statement about sawing metal that immediately ignited a fire in me. She said "Get as close to the line as you can without crossing it." I couldn't help but laugh because I feel that's how I live my entire life - seeing how far I can go without crossing the line.

This got me to thinking about how the statement applies to writing poetry. We can play it safe and write about simple things like the beauty of an autumn sunset or the smell of good cooking wafting through our home. We can compose our poems in standard accepted forms. Or we can take risks.

I prefer to write about complex emotions and human relationships. I want to write poems that challenge how the reader perceives their own world. I want to open the door (or perhaps just a window) to allow the reader to see a different point of view.

As you think about writing your 31 poems in 31 days, try to find the perfect balance for yourself - the balance between safe poems and those poems that "get close to the line ... without crossing it." But once (or more if you're so inclined) I want to challenge you to go ahead and cross the line. Find something you're so passionate about or so emotional about that your writing become raw and visceral.

Go ahead and write dangerously! I dare you! (And you may even thank me later.)

I wish you many glorious words,
Amy McGrath

OctPoWriMo 2016 Countdown - Thinking Weird Thoughts

Greetings, my fellow word artists!

As OctPoWriMo approaches, I have found myself completely overwhelmed with the assignments for my studio art classes. I'm currently taking classes in watercolors, glass fusing, computer graphics, art history, and jewelry making. If that weren't enough, I wanted to take advantage of every opportunity I could to grow as an artist, so I also enrolled in a creative writing class.

But why am I telling you all of this? I am learning more each day just how much one art bleeds over into another. In glass fusing, I needed a clean line drawing for a pattern, so I applied my computer graphics lessons to clean up a drawing in Illustrator. In art history, we were shown how the Sistene Chapel ceiling is organized. What I saw in that little graphic was a nice geometric pattern for a glass fusing project. In watercolors, we're currently working with resists and masking. Same thing is happening in glass as we work on designs for sandblasting.

So what does any of this have to do with creative writing or, specifically, OctPoWriMo? Every single experience each day is challenging how I see, hear, and understand the medium that we use for our art - WORDS. Some of the vocabulary that has been prevalent in my own experiences recently are

  • masking
  • resist
  • glazing
  • fire
  • fiber
  • wash
  • gradient
Can you see how the vocabulary from your own life can generate interesting ways of combining words?

In computer graphics, we've been asked to design a shampoo bottle. I'm toying with the idea of a ginger-scented shampoo for Gingers (redheads, just in case the term is unfamiliar to you!) I want to call the product RED, but I don't know what the shape of the bottle is yet. I am asking myself the question, "What shape is red?"

To prepare for OctPoWriMo, I want to encourage to you keep a journal of words. Just a simple list of words. And ask weird questions like "what shape is red?" or "what does the number 7 smell like?: or "what color is the sound of breaking glass?"

Keep playing with words!

Amy McGrath

Theme or Not - OctPoWriMo 2016 Countdown

“We swallowed the chaos because we knew we didn't want to be ordinary.” ― Robert M. Drake

I was perusing PublicDomainPictures.net to see if I could find anything to inspire today's post and I came upon the photo below. I found it so intriguing, There was obviously a storm coming or going and the sun low in the sky, either early morning or late evening.

I've always been drawn to the between such as this, between light and dark, or the light between the dark. Betweens such as, between night and day, this world and the next, heaven and earth. You can find poetry just about anywhere.

Do you gravitate toward a theme; is there a general theme to your poetry? Or, do you write about all sorts of topics?

Photos and Poetry - OctPoWriMo 2016 Countdown

One of the reasons I went out of town last weekend was to take lots of photos to use for OctPoWriMo. I use a combination of my own photos, like the one below, and photos from PublicDomainPictures.net to go with the posts.

Being a writer, and knowing how it feels when someone uses my work without permission, I think it is important not to display photos without permission unless they are from a free site such as the one I mentioned above. You also want to make sure you link back to the original photo and give attribution.

That being said, you don't have to be a professional photographer to take unusual or interesting shots that would make a nice addition to your poetry.

Do you use photos with your poetry?

Someday - OctPoWriMo 2016 Countdown

I wasn't able to have a garden this year as there are too many trees in my daughter's yard. Every house I pass that doesn't have trees I look at longingly. Someday I will have a place of my own that gets lots of sunlight for my gardens, chickens, and lovely places to sit to relax and write when the chores are done.

My garden last year, front and back patio.
Do you have a "someday" that you are aiming for?

Filling Your Creativity Cup - OctPoWriMo 2016 Countdown

This weekend I left town for the foothills of Franklin, NC. and Helen, Ga. (they are only about an hour apart.) I didn't do anything poetry. I went crystal and stone shopping, I hiked up to Anna Ruby Falls, took oodles of photos, ate lots of food (good, not so good and some down right tasty!) and enjoyed perusing some of the shops. I was only gone about 30 hours but it was just what I needed.

Sometimes you have to get away, even if it is only two hours from where you live, to recharge your batteries and fill your creativity cup. My creative juices are flowing and I can't wait for OctPoWriMo to get here!

I hope you find time to get out of town, even if it is only for the day, to explore somewhere you've never been, it really makes a world of a difference.

Resistance to Change - OctPoWriMo 2016 Countdown

There is no sin punished more implacably by nature than the sin of resistance to change. --Anne Morrow Lindbergh
I chose a book on my shelves and opened to the above quote. It amazes me even though it happens time and again, that when I look for assistance in my books it opens to exactly what I need. The book I opened isn't even a poetry book but what followed the quote is about the poet, Anne Morrow Lindbergh. I find poetry (or about poets) within books that I don't even realize have such.

Resistance to change - yes, I have some resistance. Probably why this year has been so difficult. But time moves forward whether we are ready or not. Better to go with the flow. More fodder for poetry.

Do you resist change?

Being in the Moment - OctPoWriMo 2016 Countdown

I'm trying... so hard to "embrace and appreciate the present moment of 'what is.'" but that isn't always easy. In fact it seems darn difficult most of the time. Why do you think that is? Oh yeah, I remember, it's because I'm a bit of a perfectionist control freak. I have this way of seeing how I think things should be, should be. Ugh! I've tried to shrug that piece of me off but it is always there in the background.

With poetry and art, I let go of it. I let go of the shoulds and the shouldn'ts and just let the words flow. It is the only time I really feel I can be right here, right now. Of course that has taken me awhile but in that one moment of creation, it's all good.

One Word at a Time - OctPoWriMo 2016 Countdown

Today I did something different with my magnetic poetry, I pulled words that called to me and instead of making a poem out of just those words, I chose one of them and wrote whatever came up for me. I then chose another word from my pile and wrote what came up for me until I wrote with all the words that wanted to be heard.

Each one was only about a sentence long and that was fine. I don't feel the poem is finished yet, I'm going to go through each of the sentences and see how they fit together and in what form. I'll probably share the end result in a later post.

It's been a rough week for me, my car even broke down and I had to take her to the car doctor today. I'm feeling rather exhausted and this photo pulled at me. I wish I was sitting there writing and enjoying the view.

How was your week? Have any plans for the weekend?

A poem that I wrote over a year ago that came to me one line at a time and seems a fitting message for me now.

Ties
ties that bind
bind our hearts and tangle our feet
feet that can't move as though stuck in cement
cement weighing the child I used to be many summers past
past time to let go, drop these binds that trip me and make me fall
fall into being all of who I am without these ties that hold me down
down to me, my soul screaming to be heard loud and clear
clear to speak my truth that's begging to unfold
unfold my limbs to skip and dance again
again I dance
dance

Issues, Writing, and Poetry - OctPoWriMo 2016 Countdown

The last few days I've been getting ready for out of town guests arriving tomorrow. I'm currently staying with my daughter and granddaughters and it is my daughter's dad and wife of 20ish years coming to visit. All kinds of issues have been coming up for me. Normally I wouldn't be part of the visit but living here, and unable to go anywhere at this time, I'm going to be here.

Poetry is a great way to deal with past issues that pop up unexpectedly. Free writing can help you get it all on the page and somewhere in the middle or so, things start to come together. That's why my poetry prompts often start out with free writing on whatever the topic of the day is, it helps get things moving. Once you see a thread of possibility, that's when you can decide if you want to create a specific type of poem or continue with free form and play with the words and spacing until you have it the way you want it.

Do you vent through poetry?

Keeping Poetry Simple - OctPoWriMo 2016 Countdown

I like to keep things simple for OctPoWriMo, if there are too many rules or things get too complicated within a poetry form, I tend to move on to something else. For me keeping things simple with poetry means that I often choose a word from a book to write a poem or work with my magnets like I did again this morning.

Playing with my magnets.
I tend to write free form though I've been known to write Haiku, The Blitz, Rhyme (self explanatory), Shape poetry and I do favor the Acrostic, oh and for some reason I seem to love counting and playing with syllables. I've experimented with others but for the most part those are where I tend to play with words.

Do you have a favorite poetry form and if you do, what is it?

Poetry is Emotions... OctPoWriMo 2016 Countdown

I decided to re-post this one from September 2014, it follows along with the post from yesterday.

-------------

Writing poetry everyday can be a challenge, which of course that is what OctPoWriMo is about. Well at least to some degree. It's about poetry and word awareness. It's about inspiring and sharing poetry with the world. It's about understanding that writing poetry really can be for everyone.

Poetry is emotions transferred to the page. We all have emotions, we all feel pain, love, loss, caring, and more.

Writing poetry can be a traditional form, a made up form, or free form. It can make sense, or not.

Gather your tools, your list of words, your magnets, your books, open to your senses, open to your feelings and give yourself permission to write a poem everyday.

Keep it simple.

What are you feeling?

What are you seeing?

To write poetry everyday, is to relax into the words, to not make it complicated, to allow yourself to write whatever comes up for you.

Come to the page at the same time everyday, or not.

Write in a notebook, on your blog, in Evernote, 750words.com, Yarny or even on Twitter as micropoetry in 140 characters or less.

There is no right or wrong way to participate in this challenge. You can write 31 poems in 31 days, we can do it together.

Getting Ready for OctPoWriMo 2016

Every day during September, we are here chatting about writing and how you can get ready for OctPoWriMo in October. For some, it's no big deal to write a poem every single day but for others, it can be quite difficult to stay the course through the month. Honestly it is all up to you. If you choose to write daily we are here for you, if you choose not to write daily we are still here for you.

There are probably as many ways to get ready for OctPoWriMo as there are participants, the biggest thing is to remember to be kind to yourself, explore poetry in new ways if you are able, or write what is familiar. Read our tips and prompts to find inspiration or go on your own discovery journey to find inspiration. Whatever works for you. We only make suggestions. Write with pen and paper, or write on your laptop, try new forms of poetry or stick with your favorite type. It is all good.

If you've noticed, everyday I've been posting several posts from previous Septembers. There are so many juicy, informative, and delectable posts from previous years that I hope you will check them out. You never know when there will be a good bit of wisdom that will help you along your passion for words.

One more thing, if you've never participated before, you can go to the previous October link ups and explore what others have written, such as; October 2015.

New Places - OctPoWriMo 2016 Countdown

OctPoWriMo will encourage you to follow your curiosity and you never know which way it may take you but it will surely stir your imagination. Take a left turn instead of a right, go north instead of south, follow a scent, follow the signs until something turns up that gets your words flowing.

If you can't get out of the house for whatever reason you can explore (a little bit) free photos on Public Domain Pictures, until you find something that stirs the cauldron of words inside of you. That's where I found the photo displayed here. I can imagine sitting in the field, watching the sheep graze and my imagination begins to take off in several different directions.

What do you see when you look at this photo? What word or words come to mind?

Magnetic Fun - OctPoWriMo 2016 Countdown

I needed a dash of inspiration today and I pulled out my little box of magnetic fun, magnetic poetry. As some of you know, I went through a break up earlier in the year. The last five months, though creative in other ways, I haven't written much poetry. You could say that I need OctPoWriMo to kick start my poetry as any of you.

OctPoWriMo is for everyone and anyone; young or old, new to poetry, poets that write everyday, and poets who may have forgotten the love of words for a time. No matter what brings you here, you will find bits of gold among the prompts that will stir the fire within that is always there waiting.

My Playful Poem:

life brings wisdom
you can
explore the
blush
and
magic of romance
or laugh and make cake

Finding Inpsiration - OctPoWriMo 2016 Countdown!

OctPoWriMo is here to help jump start your poetry with others that understand the journey.

Sometimes the words are jumping out of you and you can't write fast enough to get them onto the page. Other times your Muse seems to be on a sabbatical.

If you are open you can find inspiration in the most unlikely places, like this interesting pothole cover that I found in St. Augustine, Fl.

Quote from a previous participant:

Hey, Things are going pretty amazing thanks for asking. You're a wonderful OctoPoWriMo host, Morgan. And yes, I am writing poetry every single day. Your prompt seem to hit the right spot because words are just flowing like a stream! Keep 'em coming. ~The Abbie regarding Wild Writing

Countdown to OctPoWriMo 2016!

Are you missing NaPoWriMo? Then you are in the right place! OctPoWriMo: 31 Poems in 31 Days, is October Poetry Writing Month, a poetry challenge to write a poem a day (on your blog, in your journal, in our Facebook group, or on other social media) during the month of October and link up your poetry here for all of us to share and support each other on this poetry journey. You can find inspiration through our daily poetry prompts or write from your own prompts.

In September 2012 I decided it was time that we (poets and lovers of words) had another poetry month besides April. Hence OcPoWriMo (October Poetry Writing Month) was born. What I didn't know was that it is actually poetry month in England in October, happy coincidence.

In the previous years we have had volunteers, and myself, posting daily tips during the countdown in September and the daily prompts in October. This year I am facilitating OctPoWriMo differently.

During September I will be posting countdown fun leading up to OctPoWriMo and asking you to sign up on the Link Up page. On the last day of September I will be posting the FULL LIST of poetry prompts for October.  Yes I will still be posting daily here for the OctPoWriMo adventure, but in the past many asked if they could see the prompts ahead of time. I also wanted to make sure that I had a list to share on Instagram.

Still lots of poetry fun to be had by all!

So hop on over to the OctPoWriMo link up, sign up today and remember to tell all your poet friends and lover of words with the hashtag #OctPoWriMo across social media!
